One of my former students sent a letter to his teachers at City College letting them know that he had been accepted into a 4-year program after many turns in the road. He thanked them for helping him get back on track. Seeing students find the path that is right for them and then succeed is part of why teachers teach. In addition, he had a message for his fellow students – at whatever stage they are in their education.
…I would like to direct this to your current and future students. To the future leaders of the world: The individuals standing at the front of the room near the podium, desk, or board are there to HELP you! You or the state paid for your classes, your supplies, and maybe some new shoes\clothes. And, well… you are in a seat which puts you above the percentile of those who are not trying to be better. Stick with it. Be involved. Meet new friends, learn something new and lead others to be better. But first, you have to do the work. These professors are not there to lecture and assign homework while you check social media, draw or daydream. And surely, they are not going to do the work for you. Step up, step in and be a leader. Sometimes we need a push and you might be the one who either starts it or is pushed to be better. Communicate with your professors and classmates in class and outside of class. I guarantee you’ll feel better while growing in a positive way. And besides, your Professors like when you interact!
Finally, like many of you, my road wasn’t easy to get where I am now and I still have a ways to go with plenty of work ahead of me. However, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel academically.
It all happened because of hard work, persistence, faculty guidance, and support from family and friends. Some say you become who you surround yourself with. I believe that. I also believe that we are all winners. Life is short. Life is long. Life is fun. Life is what you make it. You’re a winner through and through. Now get up, brush yourself off and maybe the person next to you and get moving. Today is the day.
